Last November, Running Start launched a worldwide video contest, Run with Running Start, to highlight their amazing alumnae. The top 3 young women who were selected, included our President and Founder, Rana Abdelhamid. This past week, Rana Abdelhamid was voted as the “Next Rising Political Star.” We can’t help but agree that Abdelhamid really is a “Woman to Watch”!
Annually, the Young Women to Watch Awards draws about 400 of Washington D.C.’s political elite, including 20 congresswomen. This year the awards were hosted at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, DC.
At the awards, Abdelhamid had the opportunity to campaign and ask for votes. Abdelhamid told us that, " being in a space with powerful women from both the private and public sector was really empowering for my vision for WISE in the future. It was refreshing to see how excited people were about our mission." Abdelhamid gave a speech in front of the audience that evening that inspired them to vote for her. At 16, Abdelhamid started her work with a domestic violence organization. The stories she was exposed to made her feel helpless and drove her to look for more preventative measures for violence. Rana told us that members of WISE helped support her in crafting her speech and listening to her practice. Talk about sisterhood!
Abdelhamid plans on using the $5,000 grant to expand WISE programming to more locations and strengthen the summer program so that more young women can gain the skills they need to propel themselves into leadership roles. We would like to, once again, congratulate Abdelhamid for her success for being selected as this nation’s Next Rising Political Star.
