Solidarity for Yasmin: Reclaiming NYC and Standing Against Hate

  • Uptown 6 Subway near the 23rd Street Stop New York (map)

The courageous and strong, Yasmin was horrifically verbally and physically attacked on a New York City subway Thursday night by three drunk white men who repeatedly yelled “Donald Trump” and attempted to remove her hijab. We are calling on NYers to join us to reclaim the space where Yasmin was attacked. Yasmin is not alone in her experience. In the weeks following Trump’s election, the group recorded 867 hate incidents committed. Of those, 206 occurred in public places.

We invite Muslim women to wear the hijab and non-Muslim allies to join us to demonstrate and reclaim the route and space where Yasmin was attacked. We want to show all Muslim women that NYC is our city. The goal of this action is to reclaim NYC as Muslim women after Muslim women continue to experience disturbing incidents of violence and hate. We will not let this hate go unchecked.

We assert that this is not an isolated incident; it occurred in the context of growing Islamophobia in NYC. The MTA and other public institutions must take proactive measures to address harassment and discrimination against Muslims by developing a public awareness campaign, training their staff on institutional racism and Islamophobia, and implementing a system to report hate based abuse.

Here is Yasmin's full story: "I initially was not planning on making a post about what happened yesterday, but you will probably be seeing stories about it on the news & in the newspaper tomorrow. I take the train every single day going to & coming from class, but yesterday, something happened that I never thought would happen to me. I was harassed on the subway last night and it was just so dehumanizing I can't speak about it without getting emotional. Three white racists ripped the straps off my bag & attempted to yank my hijab off my head. They yelled such disgusting slurs at me, I was so helpless and felt defenseless. "Look it's a fucking terrorist", "go back to your country", "take that rag off your head", and so many more. Trump's name was repeatedly said & it finally clicked in my head. No matter how "cultured" or "Americanized" I am, these people don't see me as an American. It breaks my heart that so many individuals chose to be bystanders while watching me get harassed verbally and physically by these disgusting pigs. Trump America is real and I witnessed it first hand last night! What a traumatizing night. Please stay safe everyone & never let anyone take your rights away. Just thought I should share that with you all tonight."
